Birmingham City | January Update #2

Birmingham City

After gaining promotion to the Premier League. the battle to stay in this league was going to be a tough one. Had to invest during the summer transfers to make sure we were capable for the step up. Things have gone much better than what I had thought! As we come into the January transfer window I thought it was time to reflect back on what has been an impressive first half of the season at St. Andrews. We sit in 6th place! 10 wins, 3 draws and 7 loses. I didn’t expect us to be even be close to the top half of the table! The team has adapted quickly to the league and the results are showing. Norwich have also been in really good form since they’re promotion, Bournemouth have been awful so far and can see them dropping back down to the Championship.

Probably brought in a few too many but i had to be sure we had some sort of depth at the club. Was happy to sign Gary Mackay-Steven, John Lundstram, Sergio Rico, Grant Hall, Luke Garbutt, Ezequiel Rescasldani on free transfers. Added some much-needed quality to the side. Andre Wisdom joined from Liverpool on a £2m deal and has been a star for us same with Jack Hunt. Charlie Austin has struggled to adapt to our play style, I will be looking to move him on towards the end of the season. Dele Alli has been an inspired loan signing one of our best players so far, I’ll be looking to sign him permanently if I can gather the funds. Perry Ng and Warre Deweitte are youth players with big futures ahead for them. As for outgoings nothing major just a lot of reserve and youth players released or on loan.

Top 3 players so far

Clayton has been fantastic once again this season. Someone at the age of 31 I wouldn’t had expect him to be this consistent. Playing upfront sometimes on the right wing he has racked up 5 goals, 5 assists and 6 man of the match wards. Averaging an 7.87 rating! His my type of striker the amount of work rate he puts in, need to find a younger version of him.

Young Dele has been outstanding. Similar to the role Lewis Baker played for us last year, he is currently our highest scoring with 7 goals in all competitions. His on a season long loan from Celtic but would love to him this deal permanent. He has even pushed Callum Reilly out of the first team due to his performances.

Picked up John after he was released by Everton, initially he was meant to be a backup but his development this season has seen him turn into a first team starter. Playing in a deeper defensive role he has assisted 5 goals and scored 2. Rated highly by the coaches here I expect big things to come from the 21 year old.

Seeing as we are flying in the league my aim now is to finish in the top 10. Next update will be the end of the season one.
